Shira Lake

Nature varies in geographical places, which sometimes are real phenomena worth of specific research. One of those places is the Shira Lake situated in the Republic of Khakasia (Russia). This reservoir, looking like a huge flat bowl, lies at a hight of 352 m above sea level.

The Shira lake is a very popular balneotherapeutic health resort and it is considered to be a unique natural laboratory able to maintain the stability of matter cycling  with a small number of hydrobionts. We consider this system as a possible model of anthropogenic reduction of future biospheric biogeocenoses.

Field Laboratory

The research field station was established on Shira lake and is  functioning successfully. It includes laboratory (30 m2); storage facilities (30 m2) and living quarters (100 m2). The station provides the ecosystems` monitoring of the Shira Lake and of the nearby water bodies and testing of the new methods of ecological biophysics.

The field laboratory is a unique place, where students and post-graduates from Siberian high schools can do their research along with the scientists from the Institute.

Research Goal

Analysis of hydrobionts (bacteria, algae, zooplankton) properties, matter cycle and mechanisms of bacterial plasmids migration with the purpose of building a  prediction mathematical model of space-time dynamics of lake ecosystem state, including the prognosis of hydrochemical composition and  the level of  "blooming".

Spa "Shira Lake"

The resort on the Shira lakeside is a place for people with gastrointestinal diseases. It is famous for its mineral water and therapeutic mud-baths.
